Mama Speaks-James Holmes Parents Letter

May 11, 2015

On July 20, 2012, JAMES HOLMES, 27, a former doctoral student in neuroscience, opened fire inside a movie theater during a sold out midnight showing of the Batman film “The Dark Knight Rises”.  Holmes entered the theater wearing ballistic gear and carrying an assault weapon, three other guns and gas canisters.  He opened fire on the audience, and Police responded to the Century 16 theater 90 seconds after the first call for help. In the parking lot, they found James Holmes (then 24 years old).  Holmes told them he was the Joker, a reference to an earlier Batman movie. The theater itself contained a far more gruesome scene: Twelve moviegoers lay dead and 70 were wounded.

In a court filing last year, Holmes’ attorneys said that the shooter was in “the throes of a psychotic episode when he committed acts that resulted in the tragic loss of life.” Through his attorneys, Holmes has offered to plead guilty in exchange for life in prison without parole.

Prosecutors, however, have so far refused a plea deal. Last year, Arapahoe County District Attorney George Brauchler rejected an agreement, saying that — for Holmes — “justice is death.”

Those killed were Jonathan Blunk, A.J. Boik, Jesse Childress, Gordon Cowden, Jessica Ghawi, John Larimer, Matt McQuinn, Micayla Medek, Veronica Moser-Sullivan, Alex Sullivan, Alex Teves and Rebecca Wingo.

LETTER FROM THE PARENTS OF JAMES HOLMES, ACCUSED AURORA, COLORADO MOVIE THEATER SHOOTER

DECEMER 19, 2014

As the parents of James Holmes, we have spent every moment for more than two years thinking about those who were injured, and the families and friends of the deceased who were killed, in the theater shooting in Aurora. We are always praying for everyone in Aurora. We wish that July 20, 2012, never happened.

Our son pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to the charges associated with these shootings. Defense attorneys for our son first stated in open court in May 2013 that James was diagnosed in Colorado with a serious mental illness. Prior to July 20, 2012, he never harmed anyone and he had no criminal history.

We understand that if our son is found not guilty by reason of insanity, he could go to an institution that provides treatment for the mentally ill for the remainder of his life. This result would prevent any future harm to him and others.

We realize treatment in an institution would be best for our son. We love our son, we have always loved him, and we do not want him to be executed. We also decry the need for a trial. A lengthy trial requires everyone to relive those horrible moments in time, causing additional trauma.

In the criminal justice system, the prosecution and defense can agree to a sentence of life in prison, without parole, in exchange for a guilty plea. If that happened, our son would be in prison the rest of his life, but no one would have to relive those horrible events at a trial the media has permission to televise.

We do not know how many victims of the theater shooting would like to see our son killed. But we are aware of people’s sentiments. We have read postings on the Internet that have likened him to a monster. He is not a monster. He is a human being gripped by a severe mental illness.

We believe that the death penalty is morally wrong, especially when the condemned is mentally ill.

We are not alone in our sentiments. The Murder Victims’ Families for Human Rights, an international organization of family members of murder victims and family members of the executed, and the National Alliance on Mental Illness formed the “Prevention, Not Execution Project,” aimed at ending the death penalty for people with severe mental illness.

Our family has not given interviews to the media because we do not want coverage of ourselves. We mourn the deaths and the serious injuries and emotional trauma of the others who were in the theater. The focus should be on the injured and their healing.

REBUTTAL LETTER FROM MR. MARCUS WEAVER, A SURVIVOR

I sat next to Holmes family when the DA announced the death penalty awhile back in court. Some people were cheering, some people sobbing and some just in shock. I use to think that the death penalty was wrong based on hangings, lynchings back in the 19/20 century that were happening to innocent people due to race.

James Holmes has been forgiven by me personally but he will still have to answer to the people of Colorado for the horrific act that he carefully orchestrated over… the months before shooting plus he boobie trapped a whole block to due more harm. Consequences for actions. DNA has freed many death row inmates but in this case it is crystal clear who did it.

What should the penalty for a person that kills 12 people (one being my friend) and an unborn child plus shoot 59 others with an AR- 15 and a shotgun in a movie theater? Life or Death?

What are we saying as a society if there is anything less than the death penalty?

This trial is just not about a plea, at the core it is going to expose many things: Anti Death Penalty vs Pro Death Penalty, Mental Health advocates vs Non, Gun Control vs Anti Control, then make us seriously take a hard look at public safety and the current legal system/gun laws these issues all will be added to the circus.
Jury selection is begining in a month, 9000 summons to get to 24 people then trial starts in June.

I pray for all the parties involved, including Holmes parents, no one is going to be smiling and happy come stand time or during this trial but my hope is that it will began closure for the many victims families and survivors still hurting. This will be the 3rd Holidays without loves ones lost, it’s painful for both sides I would imagine. Vengeance is the Lords and we will just have to ride this out on the national stage, unfortunately. Holmes like us all have choices and his hurt many. If Holmes wanted life he should have taken others. If Holmes wants to avoid the trial then just plead guilty, stop the upcoming trial, save taxpayers, victims, survivors more harm by having to re-live it again in a lengthy trial and just face the truth. The Holmes letter albeit is a plea to live but think about the victims did they have a chance for life?

This will be a very interesting trial, once we move into the defense.  The past 10 days of court have included Opening Statements by both the Prosecution and the defense.   Both sides used the allotted 2 hours to present their opening arguments, and were a pleasure to watch!  District Judge Carlos A. Samour Jr. runs a VERY tight court (almost-a-Judge Stevens could learn a LOT from Judge Samour!)

I will catch you up on the Court Action in the next few days.  As I told Kelly, when you get thrown off the horse, you have to get back on it.  You can only wallow in the Arias Trial for so long!  Pray for the victims families to receive the Justice they seek!

Mama Speaks:Updates from Death Row

May 6, 2015

Hi, everyone!  I’m finding it very hard to get back into a trial.  I may do a “marathon” event and watch all the Holmes trial over the weekend.  It’s VERY inconvenient that Court TV is no longer being broadcast, and that HLN is still trying (and failing) to find its niche in television programming.  Am I the only one who remembers that HLN stands for “HEADLINE NEWS”?  That is ALL it USED to do…run the HEADLINES every 15-30 minutes!  To tell the truth, I haven’t seen local or national news in years!  Papa comes home when the news begins, and he just doesn’t want to watch it. He calls it “Eye WitLESS News”, and admittedly, local news here consists of murder, mayhem and traffic jams caused by people doing stupid stuff off the bridges!  I refuse to watch FOX NEWS, and papa refuses to watch MSNBC or CNN…and frankly, after reading the truth about Nancy’s Dead Fiancé (and callers fawning over her two children), I can’t take the “talk-show” format…so, I am thinking that I must live in a cave and grow mushrooms for as much as I know about the world!

Well, the news from Death Row…Wayne, my pen pal in Ohio now has email!  The prisons issued them “tablets” which the connect to a kiosk in the Day-room and they can down load their mail.  They can also buy music, and “rent” books.  This is a BIG improvement for them.  In the years I’ve been writing “my boys”, the worst is the mail.  Personally, I believe that the guards mess with it, both incoming and out-going.  Not because it contains contraband, just as a way to be hateful.  I’ve had way too many letters “never received” for it to be just “lost”…with email, either you did or didn’t mail it.  It also reduces the risk of contraband being introduced into the prison thru the mail system.  A HUGE improvement for the men on Death Row!
Toney, in Florida has heard rumors of the tablets, but hasn’t yet been told positively when/if that the tablets will arrive.  I haven’t been writing as much as I used to, and I just haven’t had the spirit to drive out there.  He sent me a “art” piece he made. I appreciate that he thought of me…but, just between you and me (and a billion other people on the Internet)  I don’t know what to do with it.
Both men continue to work on their cases.  In some respects, it’s good that it takes so long for the appeals process is so very long, it gives these fellows something to do.  I’m not sure I would want “saving my life in a court of law” as my hobby for years on end…
One other note, then I’m done for today…I peeked into the Twitterverse today; it did not appear that any mayhem, blood or disorder was occurring.  I’d say give it another few weeks and be sure that all the craziness really is over and it might be safe to return.  There’s the sweet smell of sanity in the air…
Kelly is doing her best to get back to 100%…keep sending prayers her way!
Much love to everyone!

Lets Talk About Something That Really Pisses Me Off

May 5, 2015

Hello everyone.  It is me, your Dean of Fuckery/ Law Professor/Doctor of Doctoring/resident sarcasm expert/and Queen of the Universe.  I apologize for my prolonged absence and apologize again because it is going to be longer, but I wanted to at least let you know that I am still breathing in and out and thinking of all of you.

Mama has been gracious enough to cover for me while I am not able to write.  If anyone else would like to guest blog about anything, it does not need to be related to trials or the law please feel free to let mama know and she will hook you up.

Todays blog is going to be off topic.  I could go on about the whole Holmes Trial, but I’m still so boggled that an insanity defense was allowed in this case I just cannot get my head around it right now.  Instead todays blog is going to be about something that I find personally repugnant.

I love animals.  All animals.  Even the icky ones like rats and snakes (which I personally find beautiful, but I know there is a huge ick factor for some people)and possums and spiders which of course I am aware are not animals but still.

Every single day there are stories on the internet about tortured, starved, and tossed away animals.  Those are bad enough.  Then of course there are the stories about how the last male white rhino on earth has to have armed guards now, and how the mountain gorilla is going extinct due to habitat loss and because people like to use their hands to hold ashtrays. (That is sick but true, look it up.)  Every day because we as a species are fucking assholes who figure we can rape and pillage the earth as much as we want another animal hits the endangered species list.

Most of us have seen those video’s on YouTube showing someone with a slowloris as a pet.  What they don’t show you is the animal having his teeth removed because they are venomous.  Idiots who need a Bengal tiger as a pet for the status of it who end up either dead, in which case of course the cat is killed or it ends up in a 10×10 cage in someone’s backyard or garage.  How about the Ikea Monkey.  He too made Youtube.  Thankfully for him, a judge saw fit to give him to an animal sanctuary instead of back to the fucktard that purchased him in the first place.

Then we come to my all time favorites.  Cetaceans.  Killer Whales, dolphins, porpoises kidnapped from their families and thrown into a pool and taught to do tricks for people who are happy to fork over their cash to watch the poor tortured animals jump up in the air so they can have a fish.  Everyone knows from scientists right down to school children that these majestic creatures live in family pods which they stay with for life.  Imagine being kidnapped from your family and taken from an entire ocean and placed into what is basically a fishbowl and commanded to do tricks to amuse the money, I mean people who have come to see you.

There are of course also sea lions, walrus and assorted seals to keep you entertained as they wave a flipper so they can have a fish.

The only way these particular animals can protest is to kill someone, like Tillicum did, and for his protest he has been relegated to a tank by himself so that they can still get that all important sperm from him to artificially inseminate the cows.  An animal that should be surrounded by a pod, an animal that communicates with a sophisticated language, an animal so frustrated that he did the only thing he could has now been sentenced to solitary confinement for the remainder of his days.

There needs to be an overhaul in the law regarding animals.  Let 7 horses starve to death and you get a fucking fine and you can’t own an animal for two years?  Really?  What the fuck is wrong with us?

Hunting is another thing.  I am of two minds when it comes to hunting.  Where I live is very close to the six nations reserve.  A lot of natives hunt for sustenance.  If you apply for a hunting license you should also have to provide proof that you can’t really afford meat and then you get a license.  Or barring that you should have to sign some kind of binding contract that you are indeed going to eat the animal, not just cut of it’s head to mount on your wall.    Hunting for sport?  How the fuck is shooting at something that can’t shoot back at you a sport?  Soccer is a sport.  Football is a sport.  Shooting a defenseless animal is NOT a sport.   I have hunted.  I have hunted out of necessity and I shot a deer once.  I was grateful for the meat, but it was the one and only deer I ever killed.  For three days every time I thought of that deer I would tear up.  That I had taken the life of that beautiful animal made me feel very, very small regardless of how badly I needed the meat.  Like I said though, if you are a hunter and you eat what you shoot, then I think you get a pass.  If you are just killing animals for fun, there is something wrong with you.

Japan deserves a special place in hell just for what they do in the killing cove every year.  That is some of the most heartless, sickest shit I have every seen.

I am going to ask you all, next time you are taking the kids or grandkids somewhere please don’t take them to places like Marine Land or Sea World or the Circus.  While I am not fond of zoo’s they may be the only place very soon that you are going to be able to see a still living lion or rhino or elephant so if you want to show your young ones animals take them there.

Thank you for allowing me to rant

RBMD peacing the fuck out!

MAMA VIA SPEAKS-MULTI-LEVEL MARKETING

May 2, 2015

HAUSEFRAU SPEAKS: MAMA MEETS MARY KAY

Hi, everyone!

My brain has been working overtime lately!  At one time, I “drank the koolaid” and became an “independent beauty consultant” for Mary Kay Cosemetics.  The sales pitch I was given was that I could “own my own business” by investing a meager $100 and purchasing my “Starter Kit”.  Well, ok, sign me up!  After I had my starter kit, my “director” informed me that only by “purchasing inventory” within a very short time would I be successful. Oh, such beautiful pictures of fame and fortune were painted for me!  I was convinced that if I cashed in my 401(k) and “invested” the money into purchasing product, I would be driving a pink Caddy by the end of the year!  What an opportunity!!!  I was SO LUCKY!

So, not knowing what the heck I was doing, I asked my director “what inventory should I buy?”…I should have known that the problems were going to be awful when her answer was “Well, it’s YOUR business, you will just have to choose those items yourself!”  So, I bought a little bit of everything!  Now, mind you, I had never actually BEEN to a Mary Kay party…I’d only bought the product ONE time! Actually…I really don’t even WEAR makeup! (That’s ok, she said, you have SKIN, don’t you?  Everyone takes care of their SKIN!). I admit, I WAS naive…no, actually….I was STUPID!

So, I placed my order! I spent close to $5000 buying things I THOUGHT I needed!  While I waited for the boxes to be delivered, I started bothering everyone I knew…following the Mary Kay directions for getting bookings.  Nothing.  My friends were busy, or had allergies (especially to Mary Kay, it seemed) or had one of any number of issues!  I really TRIED…I HAD to…because I had lost my job, the economy was bad, and I needed to work NOW!!!’

My director called me before my inventory arrived…and she had GREAT news!  Something had happened to one of the other Consultants, and there was room for me to attend the big convention in Dallas!  I could even share a room with 3 other women and just pay 25% of the room bill!!  Wasn’t THAT great?  She assured me that I would learn SO VERY MUCH at seminar!  It would really get my “business off to a GREAT START!!

So, I dug deeper into my retirement funds and bought a flight to Dallas, paid fees to Mary Kay to attend the convention, gave myself some spending money, etcetera, etcetera…do I need to tell you that Convention was just day after day listening to 20-30 year directors telling all of us potential losers that their success could be OURS too? Oh, and of course, the shopping for Mary Kay products that a business just HAS to have to be successful! It was just one big “I Love Mary Kay Ashe” Party!  Oh!  And all the new PACKAGING on the products!  That ugly Mary Kay Pink was OUT and now the packages looked more like the nice expensive brands that ladies buy from Nordstrom!  Oh! I was so EXCITED!!

I returned home pumped up, and ready to fly!!  When I finally got a little rest….I started unpacking all my new inventory…and the more I unpacked, the more I realized I had a BIG PROBLEM!  Every single thing I received was “old packaging”….except all the sales materials and catalogs, which displayed NEW PACKAGING!  I called my director, who told me “oh, no problem! “It’s ONLY a package!” Yes, I suppose it is….

Days turned into weeks…and I wasn’t selling anything…then, just to recover some of my investment, I started discounting…then, I’d discount some more.  I started dreading talking to a client for fear they would ask for something that I DIDNT have, and I’d have to special order.  THIS WAS NOT MAKING ME MONEY!!  I’d follow the instructions, “offering the Mary Kay Opportunity” to others…and they would have a hard time keeping a straight face…I started selling stuff BELOW COST just to get rid of it!  I was giving it away as “gifts”…my “friends” were avoiding me!

The only time my director would ever call me was to see how much I was going to order (because it directly affected her paycheck)..and then she would tell me what “MY” goal should be!  (What makes me think she was worrying about her OWN commissions?)  Not once was I able to book a real “party”…this all happened back in 1998..maybe 1999…would you believe I STILL have old PINK tubes of lipstick…and old eyeshadow?  The facial cleansers and moisturizers all became stinkey, and I had to throw those away…and there is a shoebox full of stuff still in my closet…its moved with me from Newport Beach to Costa Mesa to San Antonio to Ocala to JAX…Mary Kay is all about getting their “Consultants” to order inventory, moving it from the Mary Kay Warehouse to the Consultants garage.  And, as I understand it, like “MOST” MLMs there’s approximately a 50% turnover in the “sales force” annually. The few people who stay with Mary Kay are the Directors, who are always encouraging their downline to replace new victims, um, I mean “Consultants” to buy the “Star” level inventory so their Directorship and car are safe for another quarter!

My next door neighbor is some fancy Director…she has the Mary Kay car….and she’s been a director now for 27 years.  Sure, there are SOME women who DO have success, like she did (hell, she was probably right there with that old Mary Kay herself when the first vat of leather tanning juice was mixed up and then she helped her pour it into those ugly pink jars!) She owns TWO homes, has the Mary Kay car…do you think she is planning on EVER giving up being the Diamond Director?  (I know that if I were next in her down-line, I’d be wishing the old bat would either retire (or wither away) so I could get a chance to be at the top of the pyramid!) I’m guessing that much like PPL, when a customer pays his bill, EIGHT people up-line are paid commissions!  But, UNLIKE PPL, MK doesn’t pay commissions in advance….so your paycheck won’t ever be a negative number due to charge-backs!  With MK, if you don’t sell product, you don’t eat….and the money you are paid for product must be put aside to buy more product!  (There are just too many potholes in that road to success!)

I’m convinced of one thing, tho…only ONE person can be at the top of the pyramid…in either a Corporation or a small business.  There’s only ONE boss, one director of West Coast, one director of East Coast…and it never will be you or me!  WE will always be at the bottom of the pyramid!

MULTI-LEVEL MARKETING IS NOT A BUSINESS (IT’S A PYRAMID SCHEME)

Over the weekend, cracked.com posted an insightful article about the realities of multi-level marketing. Simply put, MLM is the same thing as pyramid scheme. It’s not a business. Almost everyone loses money. The behaviors are cult-like. And you will NOT be successful with MLM, so don’t bother trying to recruit your friends and family.

Author Kathy Benjamin calls pyramid schemes the world’s fastest growing industry, and she is right. You see the evidence all over Facebook. Several of you friends are inviting you to their party, or they’re posting staged before and after pictures and leaving cryptic messages that say “ask me how!” They often will not mention the name of the product they’re pushing, because they know they’ll lose you as a potential victim if you Google the product before they can fill your head with lies about how good the product is.

Which companies are we talking about? Some of the most common names heard are Amway, Mary Kay, Herbalife, Usana, Avon, Isasgenix, Legal Shield, Forever Living, Advocare, and Shaklee. But there are literally hundreds of these companies around. Basically any company that shows you a product and then offers you an “opportunity” to buy the product and wholesale and/or make some money selling to family and friends is a MLM. Look for keywords like opportunity, compensation plan, sharing (“we don’t sell, we share!”), independent, and recruiting.

How prevalent is MLM? In the United States, between $15 billion and $30 billion is sucked out of the economy by multi-level marketing predators each year. You’ll hear MLM pushers say that this is an inaccurate characterization, as the money was used to buy products. Yes, some of the money went toward the products – – over priced products that aren’t any better quality than you could get at Wal-Mart. So consumers are wasting money on these products, likely buying more than they can ever sell or consume because they must meet certain minimums to qualify for paltry commissions in the schemes.

Pyramid schemes have been around forever, and our government allows them to operate. Promoters will tell you that MLM is perfectly legal, so there is nothing wrong with getting involved. Just because the law doesn’t stop these companies from operating doesn’t mean they’re any good. Even though 99% of participants lose money in multi-level marketing, consumers still get sucked in by the millions. Kathy writes:

One of the reasons people have been taken in, over and over, decade after decade, is the recruitment practices these companies use. When you get right down to the way that most of these MLMs recruit people, you can’t help but start thinking that they sound like cults. The companies draw people in with a sense of community and the bonds of personal relationships, but when you decide you want to get out, they use those same things against you. People will choose to keep losing money over losing friends and their support structure. Some families of MLM members get so desperate they actually hire people to get their loved ones out of the programs, just like with cults.

Multi-level marketing companies are based on endless chain recruitment. They live or die based on the ability of distributors constantly recruiting more people. They make you think the MLM is really about selling products, but that’s a complete lie. The products are used to make the schemes look like legitimate businesses, when the bottom line is that it is all about recruiting. Kathy explains that saturation from this recruiting can happen faster than you think:

This progression works wonderfully when only a handful of people are making all the money from it. If everyone in your town uses one shampoo, no one loses out and you all have fabulous hair. But MLM programs mean that instead of just recommending your friends try a new nail polish or jewelry or essential oil, you actually need to encourage them to sell these things as well in order to make money from them. And they need to encourage more people. And so on and so on and so on.

Soon, way too many people in one area, or with the same group of friends, are selling the same thing. How soon? Well, if one person starts out and recruits two people, and they each recruit two people, etc., it would only take 28 recruitment cycles for virtually EVERYONE IN THE USA to be selling the same product.

But maybe the biggest problem is that no matter how hard you work, you are almost guaranteed to lose money. MLM supporters will claim that those who lose money just didn’t work hard enough. That’s not true. It’s simple mathematics that guarantee almost everyone will lose money. You can only make money if large numbers of people are recruited below you. That necessarily precludes almost everyone from making money, because they can’t recruit into infinity. As the pyramid below you gets wider, the new participants added have an even smaller chance of making money because there aren’t enough people in the world for everyone to make money.

Kathy writes:

Herbalife, the company getting lawsuited all over the place that we discussed above? Of all their sellers, 99.92 percent lose money. And that is just when you are a part of the scheme. When I asked friends about their experiences working for these types of businesses, most of them said they had hundreds, even thousands of dollars’ worth of stock left after they finally got out. The companies were not about to buy that back — they just had to add the loss to their other ones.

No matter what your recruiter tells you, you aren’t going to make money. 99% of people lose money in multi-level marketing. Those people bragging that they make money? Almost all of them are lying. They inflate their gross income, leave out business expenses, and otherwise flat out lie to you about making money. Of course they’re going to say that they are making money. They are trying to suck you into doing what they’re doing. If they told you they were losing money, you wouldn’t join.

Here’s the bottom line: Recruiting others to recruit others in not a business. You are almost guaranteed to lose money. It’s not fun, and your friends and family don’t want to participate. Since our government won’t stop MLMs from operating, the only answer is to educate consumers so they avoid these scams.

MamaVia Speaks-Odds and Ends

May 1, 2015

Hi, everyone!  I expect that Miss Kelly will be back in the next few days.  In the interim, will you please lift up a prayer for her as she gets a little much needed R&R?

As I said, this post will contain some odds and ends….and a few observations….
I’ve been on jury duty most of the week; sadly, it was a DWI (alcohol) case, guilty as charged.  Note to DCounty: please don’t call me for another year, Thank You!
Interesting to note that the “MDLR/Arias Assets Frozen” blog post written by a certain blogger of un-questionable credibility has mysteriously vanished from the Premire Investagatory News Network she posts to.  A rumor started that the blog post was removed because  “…sometimes articles go dark when the exclusive rights are being negotiated for things like…book deals? Also sometimes when a national news outlet picks something up the exclusivity is also contracted in the process of the transfer of ownership. I am not at liberty to say anything more than that right now. But I know you aren’t familiar with those things so I am just spelling that out for you.”  (As Gramma used to say “Let’s hide and watch!”)  I look forward to the book being published and announced on my kindle SOON!  I just KNOW it will be a best seller! (But, better strike now, while the iron is hot, because interest in the topic of #281129 is waning very quickly!)

Because I was on jury duty, I had lots of time to catch up with my reading. First on my list was the long awaited (and greatly anticipated) self-published “Our Friend Travis”!  It became available on Amazon as a Kindle book on April 22, price listed at $9.99; but I guess now that the book is a week old, the price has gone down to $8.49  I actually PURCHASED the very skimpy 309 page “quick read” at FULL price…and I then did something I have NEVER EVER done before. I RETURNED the book.  I will not review the book here. I remain just as “de-edified” after reading the book as I was before….

I also read “Behind the Words-a Logical & Satirical Guide to the Defense of Jodi Arias” by Kim Anne Whittenmore $5.99.  I read BOTH volumes I and II.  These two books cover ONLY the 8 days #281129 was on the stand and being questioned by Nurmi…but, if I didn’t know better, I would have guessed that our very own RBMD was the author.  When I questioned our Majestic Queen K, she confirmed, that she was NOT the author, proven by the lack of F*CK, F*CKER, and etcetera words within the text!  The book is very LOGICAL and well thought out!  I absolutely LOVE Amazon’s “Sample” program, where you can download a chapter (or more) to discover if a book might be to your taste or not, and I do so with a religious fervor!  I RARELY choose a book that I do not enjoy.  Do give this one a try.

I “usually” read between 15-25 books a month.  I have one of those “Kindle Unlimited” programs where I can read as many of the “Unlimited” selections as I like.  But, when I’m PAYING for a book, I have “rules”….before the Kindle was a part of my life….(seems like a very long time ago..) .I would only purchase books that “weighed a lot”….a book with 1200 pages is HEAVY!  Maybe because I am so “verbose” I expect my authors to give me a “lot of words for my money”!  Show me a book with 900 or more pages, and I’ll show you my credit card!  But, now that I have “Unlimited”, and I’m reading for “free”, I will choose a “short” 500-600 page book!  (I like “value”!)

In this age of digital technology, almost anyone can “self-publish” a 300 page book!  You no longer need an editor, proofreader or publisher!  Amazon charges NOTHING to publish, and, following specific guidelines, the author takes from 35 to 70% royalties!  Easy-peasy!  Personally, some of the “indie” authors are difficult for me to read; spelling errors, grammatical errors, errors in syntax and a plethora of monosyllabic words abound!  Back when I was young, and dinosaurs roamed, a reader was not subjected to paragraphs which were, for all intensive (sic) purposes, the ravings of a bearly (sic) educated author who did not no (sic) there (sic) thesaurus from they’re (sic) dictionary. (THOSE are the errors which drive me wild!)

My “all-time favorite” author is James Michner: (“The Source”,  “Hawaii”,  “Alaska”, etc.). I enjoy “epics”, that start “In the beginning…”  And, of course, Ann Rule…..but, I’ve noticed that Ms. Rule is beginning to slow down her production, and isn’t offering as many new books as she once did..(NO, it’s not because The Puget Sound is all out if crime!)  And, of course, I enjoy books that are associated with trials: Helter Skelter was a nice fat one!  I read a lot of English History…well I will read ANY history, really… I’ve probably read every book on Tudor England that’s been published since 1988…the reason for that is another long blog story I will do some other day.

As far as trials….I watched the opening statements on the James Holmes trial today.  What FANTASTIC attorneys!  What a PURE PLEASURE it was to watch a REAL JUDGE, and two EXCELLENT attorneys in action!  Have you all been watching this?  Do you want me to cover this one?  There are some great trials right now…but this one is VERY interesting!  After watching L.Nurms pick his nose for 5-6 years, I had forgotten that Defense Attorneys don’t ALL look like they put their suit on in the morning after it spent the night wadded up in the “dry cleaning” pile, they really don’t treat their chair like it is a lazy-Boy recliner, actually enunciate “may we approach” (rather than “m’proach”) and most don’t look like child molesters looking for their next 5 year old victim…

JAMES HOLMES:

Just WHAT is INSANE?  What does it mean “not to know right from wrong”?  Where does “sane” end and “legally insane” begin?  This crime is HEINOUS!!  TWELVE theater attendees DEAD, the younges only SIX years old and SEVENTY others wounded!  This HAS to be CRAZY!…but…two different psychologists say “no…he has problems, but he knows right from wrong!”

I had the strangest feelings/thoughts as I watched the attorneys today.  The Prosecutor was like Mr. Martinez, he knew every single item in this crime, he is passionate!  He didn’t refer to notes, he was well spoken, he had his facts.  At first, I thought “oh, Slam-dunk!”  But…the Defense began…and suddenly, it was like trying to pull the reins in on the 60-mule team Borax wagon!  The more the attorney spoke, the more I started to question what I thought I knew about mental illness!

I’m not sure what Kelly will cover when she gets back to the keyboard…but…I DO know she is working on a Death Penalty issue…sooooo what trial she will cover, who knows…you all might end up with double blog posts in the future if we both get interested in different trials….I think there are some exciting things coming to RBMD in the future…

I will end with this….I am SICK of hearing anything more about #281129.  She has no relevance in our lives any longer.  She’s gone off to Perryville, and we can get on with our lives.  For myself, now that I have an understanding of the “Perfect Storm” that culminated in Travis Alexander’s murder, I don’t need to keep carrying that history with me.  I am grateful for the friends I’ve made because we shared the experience of that trial, but I regret ever signing into the asylum named Twitter.  None of us need that negativity in our lives, and to be totally honest…Twitter “de-edifies” me.  I feel worse about myself and the world when I even visit there…I really DO have a real life, filled with loving individuals…(like all of you here, my son and my dear husband)…there are thousands of books to read, letters to write for Death Row Support, and of course, my Star Sisters and the committees I either am a member of or Chair.  The thing I will take with me from the Alexander Murder Trial is to do more to enhance the lives of my family and friends…and those who are truly needy.

I’ve missed talking to you all this week!  Leave a comment, and tell me what your life is like this week!

Love and hugs to all!
